The Centre of New Zealand

From Poetry $1 · Track 6

One day I found myself at the Centre of New Zealand
staring out across the Tasman Bay.
You know the view up there, man, it was so amazing
that I decided I had to think of a few words to say.

Shuttled on out to the national park and kayaked by that Elvis rock
back in the kitchen for soup by 6:00.
And now I'm standing here at the Centre of New Zealand
I'm not moving though I know I have a long, long walk.

They say the world is round and till now, man, I believed them
never found no evidence to think otherwise.
But now standing here at the Centre of New Zealand,
I've found a few new facts I figure I should surmise.

On the big green bus last Friday night
lick them papers and roll 'em tight.
Smokin' a J and laughin' by the moonlight.
And now I'm standing here at the Centre of New Zealand
just working hard at soaking up the site.

The days pass by me the nights are growing longer
people stop on by to see the view.
They occasionally engage me in quiet conversation
asking what it is exactly I'm trying to do.

In Nelson's little Trafalgar Square
they have themselves a cathedral there
where I drank my latte and breathed in the cool air.
And now I'm standing here at the Centre of New Zealand
trying to find a fitting description for a thing so rare.

Yeah I'm still here at the Centre of New Zealand
and I'm still staring out across the Tasman bay.
It's getting real cold -- you know it's winter in July here
but I still can't seem to think of any words to say.

So if you find yourself in a similar situation
and you can't seem to think of any words to say
just remember this song about the Centre of New Zealand
and open your eyes real wide
breathe in real deep
take a picture of yourself for your mama to keep
smile say thanks and get up on your way.
